Room to Read is a global organization seeking to transform the lives of millions of children in the developing world through a focus on literacy and gender equality in education.

Founded on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children, Room to Read works in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and to ensure girls have the skills and support needed to complete their secondary education.

Since 2000, Room to Read has impacted the lives of more than four million children by providing increased access to high-quality educational opportunities through its network of libraries and schools, local language children’s books and its girls’ education program. Room to Read is changing children’s lives in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zambia and aims to reach 10 million children by 2015.

Toyama ALTs and CIRs, along with the local community, have been working together to raise enough money to build a library for children in Cambodia. We believe that children should be reading books, rather than selling them on the street just to survive. 全世界で読み書きできない人口は7億7千万人おり（３分の２は女性）*、小学校に行けない子供は7,700万人と言われています。この大きな問題に取り組むために、マイクロソフトの重役であったジョン・ウッドが2000年に「ルーム・トゥ・リード（Room to Read）」(以下：ＲtＲ）を設立し、以来、310万人の発展途上国の子供達の人生に影響を与えてきました。*出典：ﾕﾈｽｺ

数ある非営利団体の中でも、ＲtＲは、マイクロソフトでジョン・ウッドが学んだビジネスセンスを十分に活かし、大きな成果をあげることに成功しています。その功績は前アメリカ大統領クリントン氏の著書の中でも紹介され、世界中のメディアにとりあげられています。

教育を与えることで、貧困の連鎖を断ち切ることができるというジョンの信念のもとに、2020年までに、途上国の1,000万人の子供達に教育の場を与えるという目標を掲げ、非営利組織のマネジメントとして、１）持続結果を具体的な数字で示すこと、２）運営コストを抑えて教育施設に最大限の投資をすること、３）地元の主体的かつ長期的な関与を確実なものにすること、４）地元出身の有能なスタッフを採用し、現地の文化にあったプログラムをつくること　を重視してきました。

ＲｔＲでサポートしている国々は、現在、アジアとアフリカの9カ国（バングラディッシュ、カンボジア、インド、ラオス、ネパール、スリランカ、ベトナム、南アフリカ、ザンビア）です。

今年、富山のALTとCIRはルーム・トゥ・リードの図書館建設プログラムの為に十分な資金を集めることを目標の一つとしています。
